Ending the Role-Playing

Many times because of fear and a need to be approved of and protect ourselves, we may develop various personalities in order to appease different people to maintain a safe environment for ourselves. We learn to become codependent to what everyone else wants. This chameleon type of personality disorder usually starts when we are children living around an angry, disapproving, controlling, and overly critical parent.

EPH 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

It is within every child to please their parents believe it or not, but some parents try to make trophies out of their kids. When we as children get burdened with impossible expectations we can get exasperated and stop being ourselves because who we are seems to be often rejected and criticized. I don't want to demonize parents, just reveal the roots of how we start taking on different roles to satisfy everyone else as children.

PS 139:13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.

God created you to be you, not someone else, so it is critical that we stop trying to please everyone because there will always be someone unhappy with what we are doing because everyone has different preferences. Learn to be yourself, to say no without guilt, and experience rejection being the natural you. Being yourself prevents overload. The only role you need to play is God's role, and He always loves you as is.

DT 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
