In Pursuit of Value

There has been a whole generation of Joseph's that have grown up being treated with great contempt, restriction, and many humiliating reproaches which seem to deny them the normal value and life opportunities that so-called normal people have. Because of this we can develop a strong craving for approval and validation which can lead to spiritual pride, self-promotion, and competition amongst those who profess themselves to be humble servants of Jesus Christ. Many people mistakenly think that if they just get licensed as a so-called "Reverend" then people will finally value them.

MT 20:24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Motives for serving are very important in God's eyes and we must ask ourselves honestly whom we are really serving when we are trying to help people. Are we trying to build a self-glorifying idol to create external value for ourselves, or do we have the heart of God that just loves and wants to feed His sheep? Things like tacking our name up on "our" ministry, giving ourselves the title of pastor, prophet, or apostle; and focusing on bigger numbers are all symptoms of trying to value ourselves through ministry. Our focus must be on feeding His sheep rather than feeding on His sheep.

JN 21:15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?"

"Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

JN 21:16 Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?"

He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

JN 21:17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.

GAL 1:10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Peter was not told to build a big ministry or franchise of churches, he was simply told to feed Jesus sheep and that is the right motive for serving in the kingdom. We must pray and ask God to give us His love and burden for the lost fresh every day, and then and only then can we truly serve and feed His sheep. We even need fresh sheep food from God every day to feed His sheep. If you have had a lifetime of being treated with contempt allow the Lord to give you His value and approval and be secure in His affirmation of you. Your day of promotion will come but it will not be for people to finally validate you, it will be so that His sheep can be fed through you. May God give us His heart of love to feed His sheep today.

JN 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
